Grupo de la Jota "La Calandria"

At 19:00 in the school yard the jota group "La Calandria" gave their performances to a large audience of the people of Torre del Compte.

The costumes were splendid but could not have been all that comfortable as it was quite a hot evening even though the group had based themselves in the more shaded part of the school yard.

The dancers were very energetic as they showed their prowess with castanets, tambourines as well as sticks and some very fancy footwork.

The vocalists performed a couple of solos each as well as some numbers as a group...

...when the dancers performed their pieces.

Another well received part of the fiesta celebrations.

To see the dances a 2 of the solo vocals, click on the links below.

La rondalla or "jotas" around the village.

When you think of traditional Spanish music you automatically think of the Spanish guitar and Flamenco singing and dancing. However, the jota is just as popular in many regions in Spain. Click HERE to find out about jotas.

La Rondalla
, or group of minstrels, played and sang their traditional songs known as jotas as part of the festivities provided by the Amas de Casa to complete their special day.

To give the group their official title, they are "Grupo de Jota de Valdealgorfa, La Natividad de Nuestra Señora".

They started playing and singing in the main street of the village...

...then made their way playing and singing as they went, to 3 different locations where they performed more songs..

...before ending up in the Plaza Mayor for several more songs. At each place where they stopped, the committee of the Amas de Casa provided the ever increasing audience with cava to drink and lots of cake.

To see and listen to each of the 28 jotas performed that evening click on the links below. Each clip is quite short, less than 2 minutes, apart from numbers 2, 6, 11 and 17 where the group are walking between locations.

Calanda

Saturday morning and I am the designated driver for 4 members of the Amas de Casa of Torre del Compte to visit an exhibition of patchwork and lacemaking presented by the Amas de Casa group in the (relatively) nearby village of Calanda.

The exhibition is taking place in the very large Multiusos hall and has specialist stalls selling everything you would need to produce lace - except the know how!

People are there from not just the local villages but from far and wide across the region.

Rosario, Rosi, (wearing her Amas de Casa t-shirt), Carmen and Margaret, pose for a photograph in front of a patchwork bedspread.

Young and old settle down to practise their skills at bobbin lacemaking...

...while some designs just look so incredibly complicated!

It's good to see that these activities are still thriving.

What's cooking this week?

Another cooking demonstration by Carlos for the amas de casa, this time 3 main course dishes are on the menu.

Only the freshest basic ingredients are used.

Canelones with an asparagus and red pepper filling...

...covered with a bechamel celery sauce and topped with grated parmesan cheese.

Hake with a prawn and mushroom filling...

...absolutely mouth watering!

And finally mushroom croquettes. Delicious.

To see more photos and to get the recipes of the 3 dishes mentioned above, in English and Spanish, go to the blog of the amas de casa of Torre del Compte, (Asociación "Lo Portal" de Torre del Compte), by clicking on the link HERE.

Hallowe'en!!

It's become a tradition in the last couple of years for witches, vampires and other creatures of the night to meet in Torre del Compte for a celebration of Hallowe'en.

Click the photo for the large view.

At the local bar God and a pirate start the evening with a quick drink.

Later, back at their meeting place, the vampires and others assemble.

Before they enter, they pose for a very rare photo.

Even witches have birthdays and it is customary to give presents.

Count Dracula and friend are members of the guests.

And after a splendid meal, the birthday cake is brought to the table.

Now they will all go away until next year.

El bautizo de Gabriela

Midday at the ermita de San Juan in Torre del Compte and the christening party trek up from the village.

Es mediodía en la ermita de San Juan en Torre del Compte y el grupo del bautizo camina desde el pueblo.

Click left with the mouse on a photograph in order to see it full size.

For once it is a little overcast with quite a fresh brisk wind.

Por una vez está un poco nublado y hace un viento fresco.

Gabriela is not too concerned about all the fuss...

Gabriela no está demasiado preocupada por todo el alboroto ...

...but wonders what is going on when someone starts pouring water over her head.

...pero se pregunta qué está pasando cuando alguien comienza a verter agua sobre su cabeza.

The music group and choir are in full flow...

El grupo de música y el coro están actuando ...

...but mass at church can be so boring unless you can find other things to entertain you.

... pero la misa puede ser muy aburrida a menos que puedas encontrar otras cosas para entretenerte.

A posed photo...

Una foto posada ...

...and another. There aren't many "tie wearing" occasions around here.

...y otra. No hay muchas ocasiones para llevar corbata por aquí.

The family pose for their photo...

La familia posa para su foto ...

...and Gabriela, having found the whole experience rather exhausting, tries to take a quick nap in the arms of the proud grandmother.

... y Gabriela, cansada después de toda la experiencia, intenta echarse una siesta en brazos de su orgullosa abuela.

With many thanks to Raquel for helping with the Spanish translation.

Around and about!

For the last few days we have had my niece staying with us and we have been showing her around the local area. She has lots of photos for memories - here is a selection of them.

Click left on any of the photos in order to be able to see it full size.

The old olive mill down by the Matarraña river in Torre del Compte is the summer home of our friends Andrea and Marc.

The original mill not only used to press the olives in order to release the oil, it also used to grind the corn.

On Saturday we were with our friends Mari Carmen and Raúl in Alcañiz for a splendid lunch with typical food of the region...

...followed by a peach tart made by Margaret. Delicious!

This weekend was the big weekend for bikers throughout Spain and beyond who had descended on the town for the racing event which was taking place at Motorland just outside Alcañiz.

70,000 were expected but I think I counted a lot more.

The new by-pass had been opened for the occasion but is closed now while it is finished off.

The roofs of the houses in Valderrobres are always a picturesque sight, here seen from the castle.

And here is the castle itself, or at least, one corner of it.

I'm sure that this room in the castle could have been the inspiration for one of Escher's paintings.

The arches make great shadows at this time of day...

...while through the arches themselves, the view is stunning.

Another arch but this time leading onto the old stone bridge across the Matarraña...

...and on crossing the bridge a glance to the left reveals the backs of all the houses.

A rare sight as the bridge is deserted.

Up to the ermita de Santa Bárbara at La Fresneda and a view looking towards Calaceite...

...plus a view of the old railway bridge crossing the river...

...and the village of La Fresneda from the same vantage spot.

A drive up the Valle del Silencio to the Sanctuario de la Virgen de Gracia, a 16th century convent...

...with interesting views from the outside through the decorative windows to the countryside beyond.

"I'm sure I'll find salmon in here one day".

We live closer to the Greenwich meridian line here than we did when we lived in England. This photo was taken in the western hemisphere, by a matter of inches.

Our friend Emilia's mosaic bench. She is a very talented ceramicist and we have been working with her on a mosaics course. More of that later!

The village of La Fresneda as seen from our newly tarmacked road.

The ermita de Santa Bárbara at Valdealgorfa.
Santa Barbara is the Patron Saint of Workers at Risk and Sudden Death so that is why there are several ermitas with her name on around here.

A view of Torre del Compte with the Puertos de Beceite behind, (the mountains between us and the Mediterranean). You can see our house if you know where to look!

And of course the village of Torre del Compte itself with the ermita de San Juan,...

...the church,...

...the fantastic views down the Matarraña valley,...

...and one of the remaining entrances to the village.

It's no surprise we love living in this region!
